Adding and Removing Palm Software

Learning how to add and remove software from your PDA can be confusing the first time you try it. Here are a few tips to simplify the process for you.

Adding Software
Install from a Floppy Disk
Some PDA software will be shipped to you on a floppy disk. Insert the disk into your PC floppy disk drive and then view the contents of the disk using Windows Explorer or a similar utility. If the file has an '.EXE' file extension, double-click on it to initiate the installation process (make sure to have your PDA in its cradle). If the file has a '.PDB', '.PRC', or '.TXT' extension, transfer the file to a convenient location on your hard drive using Windows Explorer and then go to the Transfer the Program to Your PDA section below.

Download from the Internet
When you download a product from the CollectiveMed.com site, a pop-up window titled 'Save As...', will allow you to specify where to save the file on your PC hard drive, or a window titled 'Unknown File Type', will appear, in which case you should click the 'Save File...' button, to save the file. Save the file in a convenient location on your PC hard drive that you will remember.

Unzip File if Necessary
Open Windows Explorer or its equivalent and check the filename of the program you downloaded. If the filename extension is: '.ZIP', '.SIT', '.SIT.HQX', '.SIT.BIN', or '.BIN', you must decompress the file. Note: if the filename ends with '.PDB', '.PRC', '.TXT' or '.EXE' you can skip this step.

Decompress the file by double-clicking on it and choosing 'Extract' with one of the following programs, all readily available on the Internet:

Windows: WinZip, NetZip, or PKZip (for '.ZIP' files)
Macintosh: UnZip or Stuffit Expander (for '.SIT', '.SIT.HQX', '.SIT.BIN', and '.BIN' files)

Transfer the Program to Your PDA
Once the file is decompressed, schedule to transfer it to your PDA using the installation utility provided with your Palm desktop software:

Palm Desktop 3.x for Windows:

  1. Start the tool
  2. Choose the 'Add...' button
  3. Select the file to install.

Palm Desktop 2.x for Windows:

  2. Choose 'Browse...'.
  3. Select the file to install

Palm Desktop 2.1 for Mac:

  1. Start the tool
  2. Go to the 'HotSync' menu and choose 'Install...'
  3. Click 'Add to List' in the 'Install Handheld Files' window
  4. Select the file to install.

Palm Desktop 1.x for Mac:
Note: this version is no longer supported by Palm, Inc. Upgrade to MacPac v2.

  1. Start the tool
  2. Choose 'Select...'
  3. Select the file to install.

The next time you HotSync your PDA, the applications will install themselves. Go to your application launcher to use the programs.
